A unique one-day event for writers in the North West.
The Word Festival offers writers a fantastic opportunity for networking, professional and career development, and even the opportunity for potential publication as part of a unique writing project, ‘Writing Astley Hall’. There will also be the opportunity to sell your already-published books on the day.

In a change to our schedule … Kate Feld will now be running our session on ‘Blogging for Writers’ late in the morning, how it can develop your writing and help you reach a new audience.
Kate is a writer, editor and blogger in Manchester, UK. She writes the acclaimed The Manchizzle blog, and is the founding director of the Manchester creative writing organisation Openstories. Kate is a renowned blogger, and teaches workshops about blogging, and helps people learn how to use blogs and other social media tools. Kate is also co-editor of Creative Tourist, an award-winning web magazine about Manchester’s cultural life.
Her journalism has appeared in newspapers and magazines including Art World, The Independent and The Guardian and she has worked with organisations including the Manchester Literature Festival, Cornerhouse, All About Audiences, BBC Manchester and Arts Council England. We are delighted that Kate is able to join our fantastic panel of Guest Speakers for The Word Festival!
Ra Page, co-founder of Comma Press, will be giving his insight on attracting a publisher and agent;
Kerry Wilkinson will talk about his staggering success as an ebook author, and his six book deal with Macmillan;
Claire Massey, Lancashire doyenne of the short story and editor of online publishing magazine Paraxis, will be leading a session on how to write a compelling short story.
Attendees on the day will also have the opportunity to take part in a unique writing project ‘Writing Astley Hall’ – a short story/flash fiction/poetry writing project at The Word Festival using Astley Hall as the subject, and with opportunities for publication for the best pieces of writing. The best pieces will be tied in to a permanent pamphlet and/or exhibition at Astley Hall as well as being published on The Word blog.
All attendees are also invited to bring some of your own books along on the day to sell at the Festival bookshop, and to bring a copy of a book that has made a huge impression on you for our Book Swap event!
The day begins at 9.30am with coffee and ends at 3.30pm following a closing half an hour’s open mic session where attendees get the opportunity to present some of their writing to the Word Festival – or just sit back and enjoy listening to others’ writing!
